I know, beef burgers might not be the healthiest things on the planet but you can do several things to make them slightly healthier and tastier than what your kids love ordering. Since it is holiday time, you can cook with them and save a lot of money for the festive season is here. Okay, almost here. sam_6734

Try to get the best quality mince you can. I like Nakumatt’s minced beef. It just tastes divine and it is always super fresh. About Ksh 550 per KG, not that pricey.

A homemade sauce just brings the burger to the next level without using cheese, eggs, bacon or any other fatty, greasy stuff that is usually put in your typical burger.

Ingredients For Burger

  • About 1/2 KG of minced beef to make about 3 or 4 patties depending on the size you like
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil for sweating the aromatics and 1 tablespoon for cooking each burger patty
  • 1 teaspoon crushed garlic
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped dania/coriander
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped tomato
  • 1/4 teaspoon of finely chopped chili peppers
  • 2/3 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon sunflower/olive oil
  • 1 small kale leaf
  1. Heat pan on low heat, add oil, the garlic, onion, dania, tomato, chilli pepper and cook for about 4 minutes or until soft. Set aside to cool.
  2. Mix the minced beef with the salt, pepper, oil and cooked aromatics. Make a burger-shaped patty and leave in the fridge for at least 20 minutes to up to 4 days. The longer the better as the flavours develop and it becomes tastier.
  3. Remove from fridge about 30 minutes before to let the patty come to room temperature or at least lose some of the chill so that it forms a nice crust and cooks evenly.
  4. Heat wide pan with coconut oil, cook the burger patty on both sides for about 5 minutes on medium-low heat for well done. I like mine medium-rare which is about 3 minutes per side on high heat.
  5. Rest the burger for 5 minutes so that the juices settle. It will still be hot but not too hot to burn.
  6. Place a kale leaf on your burger pan, a little sauce then patty and more sauce over the top. Enjoy with a cold juice or iced ginger tea.
